This past week I have started a new adventure. The adventure of letting my hair go back to its natural color. This is truly an adventure because after eighteen years of coloring my hair, I am wondering what my natural color is. :) Is it fully gray, white, or a mix of these with a touch of brunette. You will see as we begin this journey together.
You may be asking why now? I have been contemplating this decision for the past year. I believe I finally have a the courage to give it a go. First, I have ran out of hair color and I don't want to order any more. Think of the time and money I will be saving each month! Second, I want to acknowledge that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, gray hair and all (Psalm 139). My hairdresser said that how early we gray is hereditary. God knows how many hairs are on my head and He knew when the first one would turn gray because He created me. I am also realizing that gray hair is a sign of each passing year and lessons learned along the way with stories and wisdom to pass along to others. Proverbs 16:31 states that gray hair is a crown of splendor, it is gained by living a godly life. Wow! I have a crown of splendor on my head, why would I try to hide that? The second part of this verse is just as important. One who usually lives a healthy and godly life lives to be an older adult. And, older adults have an opportunity to invest in others whether that is our own children or others in our sphere of influence. Yes, I do have some fears. Will gray hear make me look older? In all reality, yes it probably will. But that does not determine my beauty and health. Easier said than done. So much of identity in our culture is based upon physical appearance. This is when I go back to verse in Psalm 139. And to remember that inner beauty and a smile is what truly shines through.
